Hike: Hard Luck Canyon Near Whitecourt

It used to be that there was nothing in Hard Luck Canyon but a rough trail to get back there and a rope that led you down, into the canyon. Developed by Woodsland County, the easy trail that takes minutes to new terrain, is one of the best road trip stops we’ve made with the kids.

The trail is easy, ten minutes tops, even if you’ve got the smallest kids. The loop around trail brings you directly to the canyon, easily accessed with stairs, with one tiny area where the kids are going to need a bit of help across (it’s more fun if you swing across).

Down into the Canyon, you might be lucky if it’s rained recently and caused the small falling of water, or if it’s nice and dry, you’ve still got lots to explore. A small area filled with water, perfect for wading, big rocks for jumping off of and the perfect area for a picnic.

How much time should plan on spending in the canyon? Our kids were easily exploring for thirty minutes – but you could plan more time, exploring and making use of the day area to break for lunch.

Tip: It’s a great trip to pair up with a day spent at Rotary Park, in Whitecourt. You can explore the canyon, before or after, spending time tubing down the fun course in town.
